The tips are a huge problem. They break way too easy even with a gentle hand. Also doesn`t go well with all soldering applications. What it can do it does a fair job.
This product is a joke. As someone who started with tube electronics repair I`ve tried every new gadget. The tip did break, even if it was my fault, where do I get a new one? I don`t. Waste of money AND the few times it did work it didn`t heat the joints hot enough!!
Don`t buy it, stick to the good old soldering irons, you`ll be glad you did. I`m a contractor & bought it thinking I could speed up certain low voltage projects, it was a disaster, a complete joke.
This product does work IF you use it properly. Some purchasers of this product claimed that the tip didnt get hot enough or that the tip broke. Look at the directions at the bottom of the page on this site and you will see how this unit is supposed to work. Note that it says do NOT push down on the tip or it may break. Also it says that both tip ends must contact the wire/solder in order to generate heat. The red LED will light when the ends of the "split" tip contact the material to be joined. Unlike an ordinary soldering iron, this unit cant generate heat by itself, the tip has to be in contact with a conductive material (wire/solder)in order to create heat. It creates heat after contact, not before. Actually a very clever product. I use the Cold Heat daily on the job.
I tried to use the Cold Heat Soldering Tool to tin the ends of 18 gauge speaker wire. I felt it was very unforgiving for a less than steady hand. I also wondered if I needed to use anything other than normal electrical solder. I tried several times to steady the wire so I could position it as shown in the literature, and then have the solder melt into the wire from the tip of the wire but it never worked that way. I put the tip of the Cold Heat soldering tool closer to the end of the wire to get the heat closer to the tip. This resulted in the solder running into the tip of the tool, which made it unusable. The solder remained in the slot of the tool`s tip. I tried to remove it but the tip broke so the Cold Heat soldering tool is now worthless. Very disappointing and unless I do find a source for replacement tips, the tool goes in the trash.
This product is trash. I bought it for my boyfriend who is big into tools, etc. The tip broke off on the first use. Don`t waste your money.
