I`m a trail runner with poison oak sensitivity. After a few bad outbreaks on arms and legs, I tried Ivy Block and have been very satisfied. I still occasionally get hit but it`s always on spots that I haven`t covered as thoroughly. If you can`t cover up with clothes, this is the next best thing.
This product didn`t work for me... I had to remove some large poison ivy vines that were girdling a pine tree. It was a big task, and I wanted some extra protection. I was wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirt. I rolled up my sleeves and applied the Ivy Block to my arms. I used generous amounts of the lotion, and then waited 15 minutes. I put on gloves and proceeded to tackle the vines. The job took about 2-3 hours. Afterwards, I thoroughly rinsed and cleansed my arms with soap and water. Then I threw my clothes in the washer and took a shower.
Two days later, my arms are covered in blisters and itching madly! The "funny" thing is that I don`t have a rash anywhere else on the rest of my body -- only the areas where my skin was exposed (my arms) and where I used the Ivy Block for protection. Even my hands were saved, just by wearing gloves. It turns out that plain, loose fitting clothes are a much better protection against poison ivy than Ivy Block.
Although this product is messy to apply, it really works...I run 13 miles every Sunday on heavily wooded trails where contact with poison ivy and other weeds is virtually unavoidable. Year after year, I dreaded the advent of summer due to the constant severe rashes I was getting from contact with this type of foliage. Several years ago, after one of my runs, I developed a rash so severe it covered me from calf to midsection and had to be treated with prednisone. My brother said I looked like one of those people with flesh-eating disease!
This experience led me to look for a product such as Ivy Block. Once I found it and started applying it prior to the trail runs, my problem has been virtually eliminated. I only wish that it were a bit easier to apply, as it is rather watery and I seem to drip more on the floor than ends up on my arms and legs. I hope the manufacturer will consider some alternative method of application, as it is a fine product.
